                    The success of various livestock development programme mainly depends upon providing efficient health cover to the livestock. Animal Husbandry Department has set up a well knit Animal Health Programme by setting up Veterinary Hospitals and Dispensaries, Disease Diagnostic Laboratories and Polyclinics etc. 

At the end of the previous  year 2006-07,  1367 Vety. Hospitals and  1485  Vety. Dispensaries were  functioning in the State.  During the year 2006-07, 582 veterinary hospitals were transferred to Panchayati Raj . Out of  these 582 hospital  only 340 Veterinary service provider doctors  could be appointed by Department of Rural Development. The institutions transferred to Panchayati Raj was for administrative purpose only . As for  their working is concerned, they are reporting to Department of Animal Husbandry, Punjab. No new hospital and dispensary was opened and upgraded during the year under report.Thus the strength of veterinary  hospitals and dispensaries stands 1367 and 1485 respectively as on 31.3.2008. 

During the year 2007-08, average number of livestock units served per veterinarian was 5159. The average number of villages covered per veterinary institution was 4 during the year under report.
