State produced 658 Murrah Buffalo bulls for Semen
Stations and natural services.
n
In sperm stations buffalo bulls with a dam yield of
more than 4000 Ltrs. per lactation are being used.
n
Nili Ravi buffalo (Native Breed of State) is being
upgraded by producing high genetic value bulls with a dam yield 3600
Ltrs.per lactation.
n
H.F. Frozen embryos has been imported and are being
used for exotic bull production. We hope to produce 20 to 25 H.F.
Bulls with a daughter average 12000 Ltrs. Per lactation.
n
State is importing H.F. Sexed Semen for enhancing
female calve only and to check problem of unwanted male claves.
n
State imported 2.25 lacs frozen semen doses for the
improvement of breed.
n
For H.F. Cross the minimum standard is 7000 Ltrs.
Per lactation and semen is produced from H.F. Cross bulls with a dam
yield of more than 7000 Ltrs. per lactation.
n
Progeny testing programme for bulls has been
implemented in the State and 120 bulls are being tested.
n
Field performance recording has been implemented to
locate high yielding buffalo and cows with the farmers.
n
For the improvement of Indigenous breed (Sahiwal).
37 high genetic bulls were procured for own use and for other state.
n
To provide A.I. services at grass root level, 1565
private A.I. workers trained during 2009-10 & 2010-11 and 358 are
under going training.
n
A.I. coverage in cows is more than 90% and in
buffaloes is 45%.

Livestock sector contributes 13% to the State GDP

With just 2% cattle and buffaloes, the State contributes 9% milk
to central pool .
Ø
Punjab produces 9412 thousand tons of milk annually.
Ø
Despite decline in the cattle and buffalo population, increase in
milk production during the last 5 years

Per capita availability of milk is highest i.e. 944 grams per day-
About four times of national average

Per Capita availability of eggs per annum is 128 eggs –More than
2.5 times of National average (51 eggs)
