            The state of Punjab, located in the North region of the country, has a geographic area of 50,362 sq.km., which is 1.5 % of the country’s geographic area. In 2001, Punjab has a total human population of 24.29 million (2.4 % of the country’s population). The rural population is      66.1 % and urban population is 33.9 % and the population density of 482 persons per sq.km.  The forest cover of the state is 2,432 sq.km. The estimates of milk, egg and wool production were 8391 thousand tonnes (second in rank among the states), 30681 lakh nos and 554 thousand kgs. respectively in 2003-04.

             As per the last 17^th livestock census, the state of Punjab had 1.10% of Cattle, 6.12% of buffaloes, 0.36% of sheep, 0.22% of goats and 0.22% of pig population of the country. The poultry population is 2.2% of the country’s total poultry population

Livestock

In Punjab, the crossbred cattle has decreased by 16.3% and indigenous cattle decreased by 37.3% during the period between 16^th and 17^th census showing an overall decrease of 22.7% in total cattle population during the inter-censal period. The buffalo population has also shown a  decline of 2.9% during the period. The population of sheep, goats and pigs has also decreased by 49.5%, 32.9% and 69.8% respectively. The total livestock in the state has decreased from 9.858 million to 8.607 million between these two censuses showing a decrease of 12.7%.

Poultry

There is a slight decrease in the fowl population in the state during the period. The fowl population has decreased by around 2.3 % and the total poultry by 2.2 % in the state.     

The 17^th Quinquennial Livestock Census was taken up in Punjab State during the year 2003-04 with reference date as 15thOct2003. This Census was taken up simultaneously in all the States of the Country. The results of this Census are as under:-
